We’ve designed Treasure Hunt Newcastle to be step-free around the whole route.
We asked a mobility scooter user to do an honest, independent accessibility review in return for a free game.
The test was carried out on 28th September 2024 and below is the unedited review.
The route was mostly good for a mobility scooter / wheelchair, just a few areas of cobbles and a lack of dropped kerbs in places but a short detour was fine.
Corner of St Andrew’s Street and Stowell Street
At the lead up to clue 4, you suggest staying on the left hand side of the street, however after crossing towards the pub, there is no dropped kerb on that side (or if there was it was obscured by massive wheelie bins).
The road was closed to traffic due to the football being on so it wasn’t a problem to continue up the road a bit more to a proper crossing. I would suggest wheelchairs stay on the right hand side of the road until the proper traffic light crossing.
Cobbles of Friars Street
After clue 5 there is a clear alternative route to avoid steps but you still have to go over a section of cobbles which was also quite uneven in places but it was only for a short while and we managed fine.
This is the second Treasure Hunt we have done (first one in York with parents and dog) and we enjoyed seeing a new City following the clues. We certainly wouldn’t have seen as much as we did if we were left to our own devices. It’s great that there is no time pressure and you can stop whenever you like. From now on I’ll be seeing if you have Treasure Hunts wherever we go!!
“We had a great time doing Treasure Hunt Newcastle! It was a really good length and took us all round the city, so it was a perfect way to orientate ourselves for the rest of the weekend. The clues were a good level of challenge, and there was always a helpful hint if we needed it! Plus plenty of great recommendations for places to stop for a well earned pint. Would highly recommend to anyone!”
